Morocco: 3 Senegalese supporters released following violence at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

Morocco released three Senegalese supporters on Saturday after they served three months in prison for taking part in the violence that broke out during the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat.

The trio left Al Arjat 2 prison, northeast of Rabat, in a police vehicle for the police station before being released.

Upon leaving the police station, the three smiling Senegalese supporters were greeted by members of the Senegalese embassy. One of them told AFP: "dima Maroc, dima Maghrib" ("long live Morocco").

Senegalese lawyer Patrick Kabou thanked "the diplomatic and consular representations for their efforts" in a message published on X.

On the eve of the trio's release, he asked the public to "support them and, above all, help them overcome the initial shock of their release from prison."

In connection with this same case, 15 other Senegalese supporters remain in custody after being sentenced to terms ranging from six months to one year, terms which were upheld on appeal on Monday.

Detained since the final on January 18, won by Senegal but subsequently awarded on appeal to Morocco, the host country, they have been accused of "hooliganism", an offense including acts of violence, particularly against law enforcement, as well as damage to sports facilities, pitch invasion and throwing projectiles.

A Frenchman of Algerian origin was also released on Saturday after serving three months in prison for throwing a water bottle during the final.
