Trump links the signing of the Abraham Accords to the agreement with Iran

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that negotiations with Iran were "going well," adding that he had asked Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt and Jordan, to join the Abraham Accords as part of US efforts to reach an agreement with Iran.

Trump asserted that these countries would be honored to have Iran join these agreements, which are a set of agreements to normalize relations with Israel.

In a lengthy social media post, Trump named the countries whose leaders he spoke with on Saturday about efforts to end the war with Iran, saying, “I made it clear that after all the efforts the United States has made to try to resolve this complex dilemma, all of these countries should, at a minimum and simultaneously, join the Abraham Accords.”

The Abraham Accords, signed under Trump’s auspices during his first term in 2020, led to the normalization of relations between Israel and Arab states, namely the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan.

But many countries have so far refused to join these agreements, especially Saudi Arabia, and Syria and Lebanon, which are neighbors of Israel.

With the outbreak of the devastating war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, Riyadh ruled out any normalization with Israel without outlining a path leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state, which is opposed by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump said on Monday that the process of recognizing Israel “should begin with the immediate signing by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and all other countries should follow suit.”

He added, “If (these countries) do not do that, they will not be part of this agreement (with Iran) because it reveals bad intentions.”

He continued, “It is possible that one or two countries may have a reason not to do so, and that will be accepted, but most countries should be prepared.”
