"A disgrace"... Akrama Sabri: Jerusalem is Palestinian and the opening of embassies will not change its identity

This came in a statement he issued after the president of the breakaway region in Somalia, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, accompanied by Israeli occupation foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar, inaugurated the region's embassy in occupied Jerusalem on Monday.

Sabri said that "any political or diplomatic steps related to the holy city will not grant legitimacy to the Israeli occupation, or change its historical and national identity."

He pointed out that "the current stage requires more solidarity between Muslims and Arabs," calling for "rejecting divisions and disputes that would weaken the nation and scatter its efforts."

He called for "the necessity of unity among Islamic and Arab peoples, considering it an imperative to confront current challenges."

Sabri condemned "the separatist movements in Somalia, which contradict the principles of unity called for by the Islamic religion, and violate Arab and Islamic values based on cohesion and unity."

He also asserted that "any alliance or rapprochement with the Israeli occupation, and the accompanying steps such as opening embassies or diplomatic missions in occupied Jerusalem, do not alter the reality of the city, nor do they change its historical and national status, nor do they grant legitimacy to the occupation." Sabri emphasized that "Jerusalem will not be affected by such measures and will remain committed to its Palestinian identity," and deemed "these steps unacceptable and detrimental to the nation's causes; they are a disgrace to those who undertake them."

Earlier on Tuesday, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed in a statement its "deep concern regarding reports that the Israeli entity is dealing with the separatist administration in the northern region of the Federal Republic of Somalia outside the framework of the Federal Government."

She emphasized that "the Republic of Somalia considers any such involvement or dealings a violation of its sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and constitutional system."

In December 2025, Israel announced its recognition of the breakaway region, a move rejected by the federal government in Mogadishu and which sparked widespread regional and international criticism of Tel Aviv.
