Russian pharmaceutical company Promomed has announced plans to begin the first phase of clinical trials for a new peptide anti-cancer vaccine in 2027.

Kira Zaslavskaya, the company's director of new products, explained that this type of vaccine will be tested directly on patients, since similar preparations are not usually studied on healthy volunteers.

Zaslavskaya said: "In the pre-clinical phase, in collaboration with international partners, we tested a multivalent, multi-target vaccine. It is not an mRNA-based vaccine, but a peptide vaccine. It will be intended to treat various types of tumors, and we hope to start the first phase of clinical trials next year, which will be done directly on patients, because these preparations are not tested on healthy volunteers."

The anti-cancer peptide vaccine relies on delivering short pieces of proteins (peptides) taken from cancer cells to the immune system, with the aim of introducing it to the tumor's "signals" and enabling it to recognize and attack infected cells.

Unlike messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines, which work by delivering “instructions” to cells to temporarily produce specific proteins, a peptide vaccine directly supplies the body with ready-made protein molecules, with the common goal of stimulating an immune response against the tumor.
