British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to resign from his post on Monday and set a timeframe for his departure.
The newspaper said that Starmer concluded that it was no longer possible for him to continue in his position after speaking to government ministers, advisers, donors and union leaders.
The report indicated that Starmer is discussing the matter with his wife at Chequers, his country residence, before making a final decision, but senior Labour figures expect a clear statement on his future by Monday.
Calls for Starmer to step down have been mounting since Labour’s heavy losses in local elections in May, and these MPs now make up about a quarter of the party’s 403 MPs, according to the British news agency PA Media.
The prime minister had repeatedly vowed to face any challenge to his leadership, insisting he would not “step down” or “abandon his post.” However, Burnham’s victory in the by-election prompted more non-council MPs and senior Labour figures to call for Starmer’s resignation. Some MPs who last month signed a statement rejecting the call for a leadership election have now reversed their position, while former Home Secretary Alan Johnson told LBC radio that his message to the prime minister would be: “It’s over, Keir.”
According to reports, Starmer spoke with several members of his cabinet on Friday, and some told him he should set a timetable for leaving office.
