Ghana vs Panama: Two different ambitions from the Black Stars and Los Canaleros

The Ghana and Panama national teams will play their 2026 World Cup Group L match Toronto.

This match will be held after the first match of Group L which brings together England against Croatia at Dallas Stadium, Arlington.

Ghana and Panama have two distinct ambitions for the upcoming match. Ghana, on the other hand, is determined to repeat its best World Cup performance, the 2010 edition in South Africa, when it reached the quarterfinals.

At the time, the Black Stars, as they were known, were on the verge of becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals, but their dreams were dashed by Uruguay in a match full of controversy.

With the score tied at 1-1, Luis Suarez deliberately handled the ball on the goal line at the end of extra time to deny Ghana what appeared to be a goal.

Uruguay were reduced to 10 men after Suarez was sent off and Ghana was awarded a penalty. Asamoah Gyan stepped up to take the penalty, but his shot hit the crossbar.

This failure was greatly regretted by Ghana because in the end they were eliminated from the 2010 World Cup after Uruguay won the match in a penalty shootout.

This year marks Ghana's fifth World Cup appearance, having made their debut in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, reaching the round of 16. However, after the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, Ghana has failed to progress past the group stage, failing to qualify in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Meanwhile, Panama, nicknamed Los Canaleros, has a simple ambition for the 2026 World Cup: to achieve their first victory in this major tournament.

Panama's debut at the 2018 World Cup in Russia was without a win. In that edition, Panama suffered three defeats: 0-3 to Belgium, 1-6 to England, and 1-2 to Tunisia.

Positive record in the qualifying round

Both Ghana and Panama advanced to the 2026 World Cup finals with positive performances in the qualifying rounds.

Ghana topped Group I with 25 points from 10 matches. They recorded eight wins, one draw, and one loss. In these 10 matches, the West African nation scored 23 goals and conceded six.
