Google is suing a Chinese fraud network for using its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) technology to run a large-scale fraud operation.
According to an Engadget broadcast on Friday (12/6), the technology giant is working with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and telecommunications operators AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon to dismantle the fraudulent network.
"This is a coordinated effort and our first lawsuit, and it shows the breadth of the impact of this fraud," Google General Counsel DeLaine Prado said in an interview with The New York Times .
In its lawsuit, Google accused a group called Outsider Enterprise of using its technology and brand to commit fraud.
Google asked the court to issue a restraining order to stop the network's activities.
The Outsider Enterprise group allegedly used Gemini to create fake websites that impersonated Google services, YouTube, and United States government agencies such as the United States Postal Service and New York's E-ZPass toll payment service.
However, Google, as the controller of Gemini, did not explain the internal steps that had been taken to address Gemini abuse.
The company said the fraudulent operation carried out by Outsider Enterprise has impacted hundreds of thousands of victims and is estimated to have caused losses of up to millions of US dollars.
According to Google, the group created about 9,000 websites and one million fake URL addresses and created 55,000 spam text messages flagged by Android users and 2.5 million messages containing links to fraudulent sites in just two weeks.
Google stated that all of the activity came from a single organized cybercrime operation.
