Nigeria: A protest against insecurity in Abuja was dispersed by police

On Friday in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, police fired tear gas at protesters who were marching to denounce the growing insecurity and wave of kidnappings affecting several regions of the country.

The demonstration, organized to mark Democracy Day, brought together activists and residents calling on authorities to do more to combat armed groups, banditry and mass kidnappings, particularly in rural communities and schools.

Security forces blocked access to areas near the presidential villa and dispersed part of the crowd using tear gas.

Among the protesters was activist Omoyele Sowore, who accused the government of failing to adequately address the security crisis and called for stronger action against armed groups: " This day of democracy is dedicated to those who suffer at the hands of non-state actors – kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, call them what you will. We also want to express our total rejection of the current government's lack of initiative. And we are not mincing words: since they are not up to the task, it is time for them to go," he said.

Nigeria continues to face security challenges on several fronts, including jihadist violence in the northeast, armed banditry in the northwest, and recurring kidnappings for ransom in different parts of the country.
