Europe declares Instagram & Facebook violate DSA due to addictive design

 




  The European Commission  announced that two platforms owned by Meta, namely Instagram and Facebook, have been temporarily declared to be in violation of the European Union's Digital Services Act  due to findings of addictive service design.

The decision was announced on based on the results of the EC investigation as broadcast by GSM Arena.

In the investigation conducted by EC, there are several features that were explored , including infinite scrolling , autoplay , push notifications, and a personalized recommendation system.

The investigation concluded that Meta had not adequately assessed the risks of its services, which were designed to be addictive, to both the physical and mental well-being of users.

EC also stated that this addictive effect not only impacts adults, but also affects minors who use both platforms.
