Said Iqbal: K3 implementation applies to workers in all sectors

Special Advisor to the President for Manpower and Worker Welfare, Said Iqbal, emphasized that occupational safety and health  applies to all workers regardless of type of work, and is a key principle in the International Labor Organization  Convention.

He emphasized this following allegations of K3 negligence that led to the deaths of three workers, including one foreign citizen, in a project carried out by PT Moya Indonesia.

"This concerns the loss of workers' lives. Under ILO standards, occupational safety and health are fundamental issues. Even a single worker's life must be accounted for," he said.

According to Said Iqbal, PT Moya's explanation confirmed that the company did have OHS procedures in place. However, the facts on the ground indicated alleged negligence and violations of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan regulations.

He said that based on confirmation from the Directorate of Manpower Supervision (Binwas) of the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower together with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Manpower Office, an inspection note will be issued in the next two days regarding the alleged violation.

"Preliminary investigation results indicate that the workers were not registered as BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participants by PT Moya. In fact, we discovered that one of the victims, Husin, was registered with another company, Railway Construction. This means they were not registered with PT Moya. Yet, they worked through a subcontracting chain with a foreign company from China. This is extremely dangerous. Occupational health and safety protection is inadequate, BPJS is non-existent, and workers are highly vulnerable," he explained.

In addition, he said, the management of PT Moya who attended the meeting stated that they were ready to take responsibility for the case according to the legal process.

"The company has stated that they are prepared to take legal responsibility and are ready to coordinate with the victim's family. However, the legal process must continue," he said.
