Slavko Vincic has been appointed as the referee for the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
"At first it was a shock. Then came the joy. I was shaking; it was an incredible honor to officiate a FIFA World Cup final," Vincic told the FIFA website.
The Slovenian feels this task is very meaningful for a referee, especially since he has been an international referee since 2010.
Vincic became the first Slovenian referee to officiate in a World Cup final and the 23rd referee to officiate in a World Cup final.
Vincic has officiated many major matches at European and international level, including the 2022 Europa League final and the 2024 Champions League final.
The 46-year-old referee officiated the Euro 2024 semi-final between France and Spain and several matches at the 2022 World Cup.
