The Wall Street Journal revealed that the United States offered Iran to abandon plans to impose fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for releasing part of Iran’s frozen assets.
The newspaper quoted sources as saying that US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Wittkopf and his son-in-law Jared Kushner visited Doha this week to discuss ways to break the deadlock in negotiations with Qatari mediators.
According to the newspaper, Washington offered Tehran to give up its claim to control the strait and to stop imposing fees on ships, in exchange for access to a portion of Iran’s frozen assets, estimated at around $100 billion, held abroad.
But Iran rejected the offer, insisting on its right to control the Strait of Hormuz, while military forces threatened to take strict measures against ships that travel outside the routes approved by Tehran.
