Indonesian tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi and her New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe caused a surprise by eliminating fourth seeds and 2026 Wimbledon champions Kristina Mladenovic/Hanyu Guo in the first round of the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada.
Aldila/Routliffe defeated the French-Chinese pair in a two-hour and three-minute battle with a score of 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-5 to secure a place in the round of 16, according to the WTA.
Aldila/Routliffe started the match well, immediately putting pressure on their opponents' serve. They secured the first set 6-3 before Mladenovic/Guo rallied in the second.
The match was tight, forcing both pairs to play a tiebreaker after the score was tied at 6-6. Mladenovic/Guo took the lead, closing the tiebreaker 7-4 to force a super tiebreaker.
In the decider, Aldila/Routliffe performed more consistently and were able to maintain their lead until ending the match with a 10-5 victory.
