Former Puerto Rican boxer Richard Colon died at the age of 33 after years of suffering from a serious injury sustained during one of his fights.
His father and coach, Richard Collon, announced the death, expressing his sadness and thanking everyone who had given love and support to his family over the years.
Colon ended his boxing career after suffering a serious injury during his fight against American Terrell Williams on October 17, 2015.
During the fight, Colon suffered several illegal blows to the back of the head, before his health deteriorated after the bout, as he was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma and underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure inside the skull.
The Puerto Rican boxer fell into a coma that lasted 221 days before he woke up, but he continued to suffer from the effects of the injury throughout the following years, which forced him to end his sporting career.
Colon, nicknamed "Philadelphia" and "Future Champion," had not suffered a single defeat until the moment of his injury, having achieved 16 victories out of 16 fights, including 13 by knockout.
His story has since become one of the most poignant in the world of boxing, after the career of a young boxer who was seen as one of the most promising rising talents was cut short by an injury he suffered in the ring.
