Atletico Madrid announced on Saturday the signing of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero on a contract until June 2031, following five seasons the player spent in north London.
The official website of Atletico Madrid published a statement which read: "Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for the transfer of Cristian Gabriel 'Cote' Romero, who has signed a contract with our club until June 30, 2031."
He continued: "Our new player passed the medical examination at the 'Vitas-Invictum' center at the Arturo Soria University Hospital in Madrid, before heading to the club's offices at Riyadh International Airport, where he signed his contract. Welcome, Kuti Romero."
Romero, 28, bid farewell to Tottenham yesterday, saying he was leaving "with a heart full of memories and immense pride in everything we have experienced and achieved together."
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but British media reported that it was worth approximately $46.27 million.
The Argentine defender made 156 appearances and scored 13 goals for Tottenham in all competitions after joining the Premier League rivals on loan from Atalanta in 2021 before making the move permanent.
