Archaeologists from the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered about 50 pieces of jewelry made from river and sea shells at the "Kostenki 14" archaeological site near Voronezh.
This archaeological layer dates back to a period between 41,000 and 41,500 years ago, and contains traces of one of the earliest members of Homo sapiens who lived in this region.
Most of the ornaments were made from river shells that were easily collected directly from the Don River. However, two of them turned out to be marine shells of the species Tritia reticulata, which lives off the coast of the Black Sea.
The head of the archaeological mission, Andrei Sinitsyn, said that this indicates contact with southeastern Europe, and he assumed that the people came from there themselves, or perhaps obtained the shells through exchange.
It is worth noting that the current city of Voronezh is about 600 kilometers from the Black Sea coast.
These ornaments were likely sewn onto clothing or worn as pendants. Their repeated discovery in different archaeological layers suggests a well-established cultural tradition that distinguished the inhabitants of Kostinki 14 from their neighbors.
