A conference in Frankfurt discusses aging and the possibility of slowing it down

Around a thousand doctors and researchers in geriatric medicine are meeting in Frankfurt, Germany, from September 23 to 26 to discuss issues of aging, the possibility of extending life and delaying aging.

Hot Topics

The conference will discuss new treatments for Alzheimer's disease, the effects of climate change on the elderly, new technologies in caregiving, and concepts of independent living on Wednesday. The topic of "Is Aging a Disease?" will be addressed on Saturday.

Professor Michael Dinkinger, president of the German Society for Geriatric Medicine, believes that "aging is not a disease," noting that there are diseases associated with aging, but he believes that considering aging itself as a disease is "very dangerous," and said: "This is a trend that certainly does not benefit our society. Whoever thinks this way overlooks the fact that aging is also accompanied by positive things."

The criticism from Dinkinger, who is the medical director of a geriatrics clinic and also heads the Institute for Gerontology Research at Ulm University Hospital, targets a trend known as "longevity," which aims for a particularly long and healthy life. Unlike anti-aging, which focuses primarily on appearance, longevity aims to slow down aging biologically.

Various influencers and industries have recognized this trend and are promoting strategies and products that supposedly help achieve it. One example is certain peptides (short chains of amino acids) that are purported to regenerate tissue. "There's no evidence for any of this," says Dinkinger. "At most, we have results from animal studies... No product has been proven to make humans live longer."

Dinkinger sees no problem in striving to live a long and healthy life , explaining that what helps in this is well known and supported by research, including doing a lot of physical activity, eating well, refraining from smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, getting preventive checkups, and maintaining social relationships.
