A study conducted by researchers from the Medical University of Lodz in Poland showed that ultra-processed foods may negatively affect kidney health and accelerate the development of chronic kidney disease.
Researchers studied data on the impact of ultra-processed foods on the development and exacerbation of chronic kidney disease. These foods include: sweetened soft drinks, ready meals, sausages and other processed meat products, potato chips, sweets, ready-made baked goods, and some types of fast food.
These foods typically contain large amounts of salt, added sugar, saturated fats and food additives, while being low in fiber and beneficial nutrients.
The results showed that increased consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with a higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease, a faster decline in the glomerular filtration rate, and an accelerated rate of disease progression in those already affected.
Scientists hypothesize that the negative effect may be linked to several mechanisms, as these foods contribute to increased chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, high blood pressure, and metabolic disturbances, processes that may gradually damage kidney stones issue.
The study authors suggest that replacing ultra-processed foods with less processed foods, including vegetables, whole grains, legumes and other fiber-rich foods, may be one strategy for protecting kidney health.
Numerous studies have shown that ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of premature death and negatively affect the health of the nervous system. Consuming too much ready-made meals, sugary cereals, and processed white bread is associated with an increased risk of many health problems, including cancer, type 2 diabetes, and mental health disorders.
