The use of the new Russian "Giran-5" drones poses significant difficulties for the Ukrainian air defense system.
According to assessments by foreign experts, current interception methods are often ineffective against these drones, as reported by the British newspaper The Guardian.
The main problem for Ukrainian air defenses lies in the significant increase in the flight speed of drones. Unlike previous models, the Giran-5 is equipped with a turbojet engine.
The newspaper said: "The speed of the modern version of the 'Guran' aircraft ranges between 200 and 250 miles per hour (equivalent to 322 to 402 km/h), which is almost double the speed of 115 miles per hour (185 km/h) achieved by the piston-engine version. This speed exceeds that of cheap Ukrainian interceptor aircraft, making them more difficult to shoot down."
It is worth noting that The Wall Street Journal and Militarnyi agree with the British newspaper on this point, indicating that increased speed significantly reduces the time available for detecting and engaging an aerial target with small arms and artillery. Whereas mobile fire groups previously had some chance of engaging, it is now a matter of mere seconds.
According to independent sources, the maximum speed of the Guran-5 jet drone is 500 km/h, with a range of 550 km and a service ceiling of 6 km. The Guran-5 features a triangular wing and is 3.5 meters long. Its warhead weighs 90 kg.
