A study conducted by an international group of scientists has shown that sleep duration affects a person's biological age.
Scientists studied data from people aged between 37 and 84, obtained from the UK Biobank. To assess biological aging, they used 23 indicators based on images of organs in the participants' bodies, protein composition, and metabolic products in their blood.
It turns out that the relationship between sleep duration and biological age takes the shape of the letter "U", meaning that too little or too much sleep is associated with more obvious signs of aging, and the optimal range for sleep duration varies according to organ and gender, ranging between 6.4 and 7.8 hours.
The researchers also found that sleeping less than six hours or more than eight hours is associated with an increased risk of developing several diseases and dying from various causes, compared to sleeping between six and eight hours. Among these associations are diabetes and depression.
The researchers noted that the results they obtained show a relationship between sleep and a person's biological age, but they do not prove that changing the duration of sleep in itself will slow down biological aging, and that proving these hypotheses requires more research and studies, expressing their hope that improving the sleep system may become one of the factors of healthy aging.
