Do you experience motion sickness while using your phone? Google and Apple offer a solution

Some users have difficulty using their mobile phones while driving due to car sickness, and previously they would leave their phones unused, so companies have tried to improve the phone user experience for them.

The companies concluded that the best mechanism to prevent motion sickness while using the phone is to add a set of moving dots on the screen that move in the same direction as the car's movement.

This mechanism has already begun to be implemented across the various systems of these companies, as Apple added the feature to its phones with the "iOS 18" update released in 2024, and Google in the "Android 17" update that the company officially released in June 2026.

that car sickness occurs when looking at the phone for a long time due to a conflict between two main sensations in the body: the first from the middle ear that the body is moving in a certain direction, and the second from the eye that sees the phone screen as fixed in place.

Therefore, adding moving dots to the phone screen makes the user feel that the phone is moving in the same direction as the car, and thus the feeling of car sickness disappears.

This feature makes using the phone easier and less risky for the user who constantly suffers from car sickness, so it is recommended to activate the feature to benefit from it.

How do I activate this feature on Apple phones?
Apple released a video last year explaining how to activate the "motion indicators" feature, as the company calls it.

You can activate this feature by going to Accessibility settings, then Motion settings, and then you will find the "Motion Indicators" option.

This feature works directly when the phone senses that the car is moving, so the points start moving in the direction of the car's movement.

You can also add a quick button to activate the feature when pressed, through the quick access menu.

How do I activate this feature on Android phones?
The method of activating the feature on Android phones is not very different from its counterpart on iPhones, as it mainly depends on going to the settings menu, then all services and activating the feature.
On some Android phones, the feature can be accessed from the drop-down menu at the top of the screen, then look for a button labeled "Motion Sickness Relief" and tap it.

The feature is still being rolled out in a limited way, as it is expected to reach all phones soon, but it is currently limited to some smart devices that have received the "Android 17" system.
