Sources in the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that the meeting was held within the framework of Türkiye’s presidency of the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which Ankara has held since June 2025.
In his speech, Fidan addressed the ongoing genocide perpetrated by Israel in the Gaza Strip, along with Israeli occupation and annexation policies throughout Palestine, and Israeli attacks on Syria and Lebanon. He also offered assessments on a number of issues of concern to the Muslim world, primarily Iran, Yemen, Libya, Sudan, and Somalia.
The Turkish minister stressed the importance of the role played by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in protecting the rights of minorities and Muslim communities, while the annual coordination meetings of the organization’s foreign ministers, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly week, provide an opportunity to exchange views and coordinate on issues of common interest.
Türkiye assumed the rotating presidency during its hosting of the 51st meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul on June 21 and 22, 2025, under the theme "The Organization of Islamic Cooperation in a Changing World".
At the 51st meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, two draft resolutions relating to Palestine were approved, with emphasis on the importance of developing a common position among the member states of the organization regarding the Palestinian issue, as well as the adoption of the “Istanbul Declaration”.
It is worth noting that Türkiye previously hosted meetings of the Organization’s Council of Foreign Ministers in 1976, 1991 and 2004.
