The reactions of several Brazilian national team players sparked widespread controversy after they appeared laughing and smiling during a traditional welcoming ceremony held by the indigenous people of the Australian city of Townsville.
The Brazilian national team arrived in Townsville on Thursday, in preparation for the friendly match against Australia, where the Wulgurukaba Walkabouts, an indigenous group from the area, held a "smoke ceremony" to welcome the Brazilian delegation.
According to the Brazilian Football Confederation, the ceremony aimed to welcome the team, give them a blessing and wish them a good stay, as well as provide a cultural experience to introduce the traditions of the indigenous people in the region.
However, video footage from the reception ceremony showed some Brazilian players smiling or trying to stifle laughter during the presentation, sparking criticism on social media, where some followers considered these actions inappropriate during a ceremony of cultural significance to the indigenous peopl
Reports indicated that striker Samuel Leno was among the most prominent players whose reactions appeared in the circulated clips, while Vinicius Junior was seen talking to Andrek during the ceremony.
On the other hand, the circulated clips do not definitively clarify whether the smiles and laughter reflect deliberate mockery of the rituals, as some followers have suggested that it may simply be a spontaneous reaction or a result of the players' unfamiliarity with this type of ceremony.
This controversy comes hours before Brazil and Australia face off in a friendly match scheduled for Friday in Townsville, the first of two friendly encounters between the two teams during the international break.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again on September 29 in Brisbane, in their second friendly match in Australia.
