European Union countries are considering a range of measures to limit the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions, according to Euractiv.
According to the report, European countries are exploring options that include imposing sanctions targeting specific individuals, visa restrictions, and reducing funding related to certain sporting activities.
However, these proposals are still under consideration and have not yet been formalized as a proposal by the European Commission.
According to the sources cited by Euractiv , more detailed options are expected to be prepared by November 20, coinciding with a meeting of European ministers responsible for education, sports and culture.
These moves come at a time when some international sports federations have begun to ease restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes, allowing them to return to international competitions.
The International Hockey Federation recently announced that it would allow Russian athletes and teams to participate in its competitions without previous restrictions, a move described by Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev as the federation joining the list of federations that have lifted restrictions on Russian athletes.
Thus, the future participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international championships remains linked to the development of the positions of sports federations on the one hand, and to the measures that European countries may take in the coming period on the other.
