The president of the Egyptian Football Association, Hani Abu Rida, was keen to praise international goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy after the controversial statements made by the coach of the "Pharaohs" national team, Hossam Hassan.
Hani Abu Rida told reporters after the youth team's victory over Libya in the North African qualifiers: "Mohamed El Shenawy is one of the loyal sons of Egyptian football, and he has had and continues to have a career rich in contributions and achievements with the Egyptian national team and Al Ahly club."
He added: "El Shenawy's history and status as a player and leader are greatly appreciated and respected by the Egyptian Football Association, and we are proud of everything he offers to Egyptian football."
Hossam Hassan had stated in the press conference before the Angola match that: “Mohamed El Shenawy was at one point (finished) and never played with his club, yet he returned to his level through his training with us. He returned to his level through the Egyptian national team, not only him, but other players as well.”
He added: "This was our point of view this time, regardless of whether he was injured or not. All respect to all the players, especially since Mohamed El Shenawy is one of the leaders of the Egyptian national team, but just as we respect the players, our choices must be respected."
Hossam Hassan concluded his remarks by saying: "The decision to exclude Mohamed El Shenawy was a result of our choices, regardless of his injury. I could have (eased myself) and said that he was injured, but these are our choices even if he was not injured."
