Russian Murat Gassiev, the WBA heavyweight champion, has asked the association to clarify its position on awarding the "super" title to the winner of the Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua fight on December 11.
Gassiev's camp made the move after information circulated about the possibility of holding the "super" title fight between British boxers Fury and Anthony Joshua, at a time when Gassiev's camp believes that the Russian boxer deserves priority in competing for the title, as he is the current title holder who seized it and defended it inside the ring.
John Wirt, co-promoter and legal advisor to Gassiev, confirmed that the boxer's team had submitted a formal request to the World Boxing Association to confirm or deny these reports, and to find out the basis on which it could determine the identity of the challenger for the "super" title.
Wirth noted that Gassiev had not received any communication from the association regarding the future of the title, adding that the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk's relinquishment of his titles should, from the Russian boxer's team's point of view, have put Gassiev at the forefront of candidates to compete for the title.
Gassiev's camp also objected to the possibility of giving Fury or Joshua a chance to compete, given that neither of them holds a world title with the association, stressing that it retains all the boxer's rights in this matter.
For his part, Gassiev confirmed his readiness to face any opponent, saying: "No one has contacted me or my team about this matter. I have defended my title in the ring, and I am ready to face Fury, Joshua, or anyone else, at any time."
The Russian boxer stressed that the future of the titles should be decided inside the ring, while his camp awaits the World Boxing Association's response regarding the status of the "Super" title and the mechanism for determining the competitor for it.
