The famous magazine "France Football" provided a definitive answer to the question that has been circulating recently regarding the Ballon d'Or award for the best player in the world.
The controversy surrounding the Ballon d'Or award always raises questions about the criteria used to select the best player in the world. One of the most prominent of these questions is: Is winning the Champions League title a decisive factor in guaranteeing this prestigious award?
The recent comments by Barcelona's young star Lamine Djamel sparked this debate, prompting France Football magazine , the award's organizer, to provide a detailed analysis to answer this question.
The magazine said: "As the Ballon d'Or awards ceremony approaches, a widely debated question arises: Can a player win the Ballon d'Or without winning the Champions League? Or is the Champions League a prerequisite for winning the prestigious award?"
She added: "We reviewed all 69 editions of the Ballon d'Or, and found that throughout history only 21 players have succeeded in winning the Champions League or European Cup previously, and the Ballon d'Or in the same year, which represents 30.4% of the total winners."
She continued: "This means that around 7 out of 10 winners (69.6%) won the individual award without winning the Champions League title in the same season."
She explained: “Winning the Champions League certainly increases a player’s chances of getting a high ranking in the Ballon d’Or voting, but it does not guarantee winning it. This is confirmed by historical data, as winning the Ballon d’Or requires the player to be the best throughout the season, not just in the Champions League.”
The renowned magazine had announced the list of nominees to compete for the 2026 Ballon d'Or award, which includes 30 players.
Since the list was released, competing players have begun publicly supporting themselves and their club coaches as part of a project.
Many believe that any of the Paris Saint-Germain players deserves the Ballon d'Or award, given that the team won the Champions League title last season, a view that was met with objection from others, most notably Lamine Djamel .
