Japanese study: Turmeric extract improves memory and attention markers in Alzheimer's patients

A study conducted by scientists from Kanagawa Dental University in Japan showed that turmeric extract may help improve some indicators of memory and attention in people with mild cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer's.

The study involved 13 people with cognitive impairment linked to Alzheimer's disease. For four months, participants took an extract of Curcuma longa, the plant from which turmeric, a common spice, is derived. The supplement contained the active compounds bisaccharone and tournelate.

After analyzing data from 10 participants, scientists found improvements in memory scores and a decrease in estimated "brain age" based on digital cognitive tests. Participants also showed improvement in specific measures of attention and working memory.

In contrast, scores on the standardized cognitive assessment scale did not change significantly among the study participants. The researchers suggest that the findings indicate the potential of turmeric extract to support brain function, but require confirmation through larger studies.

Many studies indicate that turmeric contains substances and antioxidants that help strengthen immunity and fight inflammation in the body, and contribute to improving overall health.
