Russian cardiologist Denis Sakalov refuted rumors claiming that the heart suffers "sudden aging" after the age of 40.
In an interview with the Russian website Gazeta.ru, the doctor said: "There are rumors that the heart suddenly ages after the age of forty. These hypotheses are not based on scientific facts. There are several factors that, with age, begin to pose risks to the cardiovascular system, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, excess weight, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy nutrition. Many of these factors may not cause obvious symptoms on the heart for a long time. It depends on the nature of each person's body, their lifestyle, and their daily activity."
Sokolov recommended that those over the age of 40 should have their blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels checked regularly, and monitor their weight and waist circumference. He added: "A healthy person only needs to undergo preventive monitoring to check heart health , but in cases of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of heart disease, frequent check-ups are recommended."
To prevent cardiovascular disease , the doctor recommends dedicating about 150 minutes a week to moderate physical activity, increasing the intake of vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish, nuts and whole oils, while limiting salt, sweets and ultra-processed foods. He also stressed the importance of sufficient sleep, because lack of sleep may lead to high blood pressure and overeating.
