Many believe that washing hair in the evening and sleeping with wet locks does not cause any harm, but doctors warn that getting used to sleeping with wet hair damages the hair itself, and may also affect general health
Sleeping with wet hair inevitably soaks your pillow, and the moisture penetrates the fabric fibers, creating a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria. Even if the pillow appears dry in the morning, microorganisms remain trapped in its fabric and come into contact with the scalp with each use. This can lead to irritation and itching, and may even develop into seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff, with the risk being significantly higher for those with sensitive skin.
As hair naturally dries , the scalp loses a significant amount of moisture, leading to a localized drop in temperature. This places an additional burden on the immune system, making a person more susceptible to colds. This is particularly noticeable in winter, as one might wake up with a runny nose or sore throat after sleeping with a wet head.
Wet hair is much weaker than dry hair, as the cuticle layer opens up and the hair shaft becomes soft and brittle. With constant friction against the pillow, the hair bends, thins, and begins to fall out more frequently. If this becomes a daily habit, the hairstyle loses its density and shine, and the ends split quickly.
The scalp becomes more sensitive at night because cell regeneration is active during sleep, and moisture exacerbates irritation, potentially triggering folliculitis. This habit is often a cause of chronic dandruff or increased oiliness of the hair.
Some believe that rinsing hair with cold water gives it shine, but experts warn that extreme cold constricts blood vessels in the scalp, disrupting blood flow and the delivery of nutrients to the follicles, resulting in slower hair growth and weaker hair. A better alternative is to use conditioner and nourishing products.
