Lamine Jamal asserted that his World Cup victory with Spain and his La Liga title win with Barcelona should give him the edge over Frenchman Kylian Mbappe in the race to win this year's Ballon d'Or.
Lamine Djamel won the La Liga Player of the Year award for the 2025-2026 season after his team, Barcelona, successfully defended their title. He also played a key role in his country, Spain, winning the 2026 World Cup.
In contrast, Real Madrid and France star Mbappe was the top scorer in the 2026 World Cup as well as in La Liga and the Champions League, and said last week that there was no better player than him last season, despite failing to win any title.
Lamine Jamal said in a video clip from an interview published by the Spanish channel Movistar on Sunday, "I honestly believe that we (Mbappe and I) are the only two players who deserve to be described as the best in the world, and I also deserve the award this year for what I have achieved."
He added, "For me, Mbappe and I are the best in the world. That's clear to me, and everyone who watches football knows it."
Lamine Jamal finished second in the Ballon d'Or race behind France and Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele last year, while Mbappe finished third in 2023, when Lionel Messi won the award for the eighth time, extending his record.
This year's Ballon d'Or award will be presented in London on October 26.
