The operator plans to cover a number of Russian cities with populations exceeding one million, as well as the country's industrial centers, with the new standard network.

The new generation of communications has become available to customers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Krasnodar, Samara, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod, as well as in smaller industrial cities, such as Veliky Novgorod and Tver.

Megafon's existing LTE network infrastructure became the foundation for the widespread deployment of the technology. The company launched its 5G network on existing frequencies after upgrading its base stations.

Smartphones with 5G capabilities can connect to the new generation network. For those whose devices do not support the new standard, Megafon has provided a "5G mode" option.

Megafon CEO Khagatur Bombukhshan said: "Today, Megafon engineers are taking a historic step by launching the 5G network in the country's largest locations. 5G is high-speed internet for cities and, at the same time, the foundation for the digital transformation of industry. We are convinced that 5G will give Russian regions a radically new dynamism for the digitalization of industry and the social sphere, which means improving the quality of life for every citizen. After the successful launch, we will continue to move forward, as much work and new challenges await us, and we are fully prepared for them."

It is worth noting that Megafon launched its 3G network in 2007, provided subscribers with LTE access in 2012, and commercially launched its LTE Advanced network in 2014, offering speeds of up to 300 Mbps. In 2019, the operator conducted the first international video call over 5G networks in Russia.

The operator conducted a test of its "Private 5G" technology in its own laboratory, where specialists were able to integrate a range of security technologies and ensure uninterrupted interaction with the existing infrastructure. Megafon also announced the launch of its "Private 5G" technology in the Russian industry.
