Argentine Lionel Messi continued his habit of scoring from free kicks after scoring a brilliant goal during Inter Miami's 2-2 draw with visiting San Diego early Monday morning in the American Football League.
San Diego took an early lead through Dane Anders Dreyer in the 12th minute, before Messi equalized for Inter Miami in the 24th minute, after executing a direct free kick from the edge of the penalty area, which hit the inside of the post before settling into the net.
The goal raised Messi's tally to 101 goals in an Inter Miami shirt since joining the team in 2023, and also brought his career total to 930 goals with clubs and the Argentine national team, according to figures reported after the match.
The 39-year-old star also raised his tally to 75 direct free-kick goals during his career, with 50 for Barcelona, 12 for the Argentine national team, 11 for Inter Miami, and two for Paris Saint-Germain.
Inter Miami continued to press after Messi's goal, before Uruguayan Luis Suarez gave them the lead in the 74th minute, taking advantage of a pass from his teammate Rodrigo De Paul, but Dreyer came back and scored his second goal in the 82nd minute, giving San Diego a point to draw.
With this result, Inter Miami continued to bleed points after recording their fourth consecutive draw in the league, raising their tally to 46 points, while they trailed Nashville, the leader of the Eastern Conference, by 11 points, with eight rounds remaining in the regular season.
