Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria highlighted changes in news distribution to the public due to the development of social media platforms, which use their algorithms to determine the content deemed most relevant to each user.
"Currently, the media is losing its audience; the platforms control the audience," he said at a discussion at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
"Social media platforms are growing much faster, deeper, and more aggressively, shifting the relationship between conventional and traditional media and their audiences," Nezar said.
Digital platforms use systems to organize, select, and suggest content to users based on factors such as user interaction, content relevance, user relationships with specific accounts, and user upload characteristics.
"So, everything we like is then recorded in machine learning used by social media. So what we like will always come to us, that's what is called an echo chamber ," Nezar explained.
He cited the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026 , which involved more than 100,000 respondents in 48 countries, to show changes in public behavior in accessing information.
According to the report, social media platforms and video platforms have become more widely accessed news sources than television and official news websites in 30 countries.
In addition, only less than four out of 10 respondents stated that they believed the news.
