OpenAI has added a new cookie to ChatGPT, giving it the ability to track user activity on non-owned websites.
The well-known cybersecurity researcher known by the pseudonym Buchodi monitored this mechanism for several months and found that anything a person searches for, views, or buys on a commercial site can be linked to their ChatGPT account.
Cookies are small pieces of data stored in a browser when you visit a website. They are used to remember things like login credentials or purchase preferences. Advertisers rely heavily on them to display ads tailored to users' interests.
Bocody says this method is known and used by companies like Google and Meta, but what's new is that it's being applied for the first time to an artificial intelligence application.
In an analysis published on his blog, Boukhudi explained that this method is well-known and familiar in the world of digital advertising, but what's new is that it's being used for the first time within an AI-powered chat application. He added that users are disclosing information to these applications that they wouldn't normally share on social media, while these applications are increasingly making decisions and acting on their behalf.
OpenAI had begun testing ads in ChatGPT for users in the United States earlier this year, and then expanded the experiment to Britain, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
Although the function of this file is tracking, OpenAI lists it in its cookie policy under the "analytics" section and not "marketing," and says that these files help it understand the performance of its services, the number of users, and how they interact with them.
When Bokudy contacted the company, OpenAI support responded that the results would be reviewed internally.
This mechanism was detected on the Chrome browser on the Android system, and it appears to be present only in the free versions of ChatGPT.
