Chinese scientists have developed and tested the world's first underwater solar power plant at a depth of 10 meters offshore.
As reported by the South China Morning Post, such a system opens up new possibilities for powering underwater operations.
The station was developed by a team of specialists at Yunnan University who used a photoelectric system based on perovskite lead halogenates, a class of semiconductor materials, at a depth of 10 meters.
The underwater facility charged the batteries and powered the LED panel, proving that solar power can be obtained even in the "faint blue-green ocean twilight," the newspaper noted.
The newspaper quoted scientist Wenhua Zhang from Yunnan University as saying, "Previous innovations in underwater solar cells were designed to operate at a very shallow depth of no more than two meters, which is far from real-world operating conditions. The current advanced development has, for the first time, proven the ability of solar cells to operate in real-world conditions at a depth of up to 10 meters."
The developers of this technology believe it could find applications in underwater sensors, detectors, cameras, and communication systems, as well as in underwater robots and devices, as a source of power.
