Russia develops a natural polymer material that increases cement durability by 30%

 

Specialists at Tomsk State University of Construction Technologies and Architecture have developed a material from the natural polymer "chitosan" that allows cement to increase its compressive strength by 30% and reduce its water absorption by 25%.

A statement issued by the university's press service reads: "Researchers at Tomsk State University have presented an innovative development in the field of building materials science, as they have managed to modify a cementitious composition using chitosan, a natural polymer extracted from chitin.

According to Irina Korzina, director of the strategic technology project "Chemistry and Engineering of New Building Materials," laboratory tests showed that the compressive strength of the modified cementitious composition increased by 30% compared to ordinary commercial cement, while its water absorption decreased by 25%.

The press service quoted Elena Kolesnikova, a scientist at the Tomsk State University Scientific and Educational Center, as saying: "We not only recorded an improvement in physical properties, but also proved the existence of a chemical bond between the supplement and the cement itself, which confirms the effectiveness of the modified material, since chitosan not only fills the voids, but also becomes part of the material's structure and strengthens it from within."

Acting Rector of Tomsk State University, Oleg Volokitin, noted that the developed composite materials show promise for producing high-strength concrete, geopolymer composites, and environmentally friendly building materials. He added that the use of natural biopolymers also contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of the construction sector.

The research was conducted within the framework of the Strategic Academic Leadership Program “Priority-2030” of the Russian National Project “Youth Creativity”.
