Long working hours affect human health, and their effects may extend to men's sex lives, according to a study that linked high levels of stress in the workplace to an increased risk of erectile dysfunction.
The study included 826 full-time working men, aged between 22 and 40, where researchers looked at five stress-related factors, including working hours, managerial support, relationships with colleagues, career advancement pressures, and the decision-making process.
The researchers found that about 54% of men who scored highest on stress experienced some form of erectile dysfunction, compared to only 8% of men who experienced the least work-related stress.
The study also revealed that the men most under stress worked an average of 65 hours per week, compared to about 42 hours in the least stressed group. The first group had levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, about 74% higher, while their testosterone levels were about 40% lower.
The researchers pointed out that elevated cortisol levels may negatively affect testosterone levels, which plays an important role in sexual function in men.
The researchers also found that elevated cortisol levels preceded decreased testosterone levels by two to four weeks, while changes in testosterone levels preceded the decline in erectile function by four to six weeks.
The researchers suggested that these findings might indicate an opportunity for early intervention by addressing stress before its potential effects on sexual function worsen.
Long working hours were among the most prominent factors associated with erectile dysfunction, while having a supportive manager in the workplace appeared to offer some protection against this problem.
The study, whose results were published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, indicates a link between work-related stress, hormonal changes, and erectile dysfunction, but it does not necessarily prove that long working hours directly cause this condition.
