Scientists have identified a marine ecosystem rich in life at the seafront of the Naajat Sermiat glacier in southern Greenland.
Cameras mounted on the remotely operated submersible captured images of schools of krill and fish, along with worms, shrimp, jellyfish, squid, and crab larvae. Some creatures were even seen attached directly to the submerged surface of the glacier wall.
The research was conducted by a team of specialists from Aarhus University and the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, in collaboration with documentary photographers. Diving in this area poses a significant risk to humans, given the possibility of massive chunks of ice breaking off from the glacier and falling at any moment.
The team's initial goal was to track how freshwater from melting ice mixes with saltwater. However, the video recordings revealed a different scene: researchers observed turbid, sediment-laden currents cascading from the glacier into the sea, resembling what they described as "waterfalls" of sediment. They also noted that krill were actively swimming towards these currents, suggesting a possible association with the material emitted from the glacier.
It turns out that glaciers are not entirely devoid of life-supporting materials. Meltwater can carry organic matter, particles, sediment, and possibly cold-loving algae to the ice-sea interface. When these materials reach the water, they may contribute to the local food chain. However, researchers note that further studies are needed to determine the extent to which materials transported from within the glacier are a significant food source for krill.
Krill have previously been observed feeding on plumes of meltwater near glaciers in Antarctica, but this study provides the first documentation of them being found very close to a glacier wall at the point where the ice meets the ocean.
Scientists warn that the retreat of glaciers could alter this ecosystem, as the withdrawal of the ice front from the sea to the land will lead to the disappearance of the area that provides these unique environmental conditions.
This has already happened to 169 glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere between 2000 and 2020, as their fronts retreated from the sea to the land. If the Naat-Sermiat glacier suffers the same fate, food webs and the carbon and nutrient cycles associated with this region could be affected.
The study's findings were published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.
