The name of Firas Mualla has returned to the forefront of Syrian sports again after his name was mentioned, according to information circulating, at the Asian Games in Japan as the head of the Syrian Olympic Committee.
The Syrian Ministry of Sports and Youth confirmed that Mualla was not its representative at the meeting and was not originally part of the Syrian delegation participating in the event.
The crux of the controversy in this situation lies in Mualla's continued presence in his position, despite being considered a prominent sports official within the official Syrian institutions during the era of the Assad regime, at a time when activists and media figures are demanding the establishment of a new structure for Syrian sports institutions headed by figures who are fully affiliated with the current regime.
In response to this controversy, the Syrian Ministry of Sports issued a statement saying that Firas Mualla does not represent the Ministry of Sports and Youth in any capacity and does not hold any official mandate or assignment from it, noting that it did not coordinate with him regarding the visit and did not issue any approval or authorization for him to represent it in any official forum or meeting.
She added that Administrative Decision No. 861 issued on September 13, 2026 does not include the name of Firas Mualla, and his presence at the meeting cannot be interpreted as representing the Ministry. Furthermore, the previous electoral term of the Syrian Olympic Committee has ended, and Mualla’s continued appearance in his capacity as associated with it does not mean that he represents the Ministry or has a mandate from it.
The statement concluded by saying that the ministry does not accept that Syria be represented by figures associated with the era of repression, tyranny and violations, and that Syria’s international representation must be consistent with the aspirations of the new era.
The appearance of Firas Mualla in an official capacity can be viewed from a political angle related to his supportive stance towards the Assad regime, and from an administrative and legal angle related to the term of office of the Syrian Olympic Committee and the mechanism for the continuation of its current council.
