United States (US) President Donald Trump stressed the importance of holding elections in Venezuela in a meeting with interim President Delcy Rodriguez, although he did not set a specific date.
Rodriguez met with Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. The meeting lasted about 15 minutes, according to an Axios report citing sources.
Trump emphasized that the elections were a crucial step in Venezuela's journey toward full democracy. However, he did not press Rodriguez to set a specific date for the elections.
"Ultimately, the election has to be held," Trump said, according to a source quoted by Axios.
During the meeting, Trump also emphasized the importance of maintaining stable oil supplies and maintaining good relations between the two countries. He also thanked Rodriguez for their constructive cooperation.
Rodriguez told the UN General Assembly that Venezuela wants transparent elections. The Venezuelan government is also in dialogue with opposition groups regarding the process.
According to Rodriguez, when the Venezuelan people determine the right time to hold elections, state institutions will be ready to ensure an inclusive and transparent process.
