US President Donald Trump rejected on Saturday an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week, in exchange for the United States agreeing to conditions that include lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports, easing sanctions on oil exports, and committing to a ceasefire that includes Lebanon.

Trump spoke to reporters outside the White House before leaving to attend a college football game, while the Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, reported on Friday that he had rejected a proposal made by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
Tehran had offered to reopen the strategic strait and resume talks on its nuclear program within seven days, if Washington agreed to its conditions.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that the new plan was developed “in coordination” with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, and that it would be implemented “without any problems” if the United States approved it.
He added that if the United States agrees to the plan and “fulfills its obligations, we will do the same, and there will be no problem in this regard.”
Pezeshkian announced the formation of a six-member team, comprising representatives from various organizations and bodies, including the army, parliament, and government, explaining that the team meets to discuss the issues at hand and has the authority to make decisions.
The Iranian proposal came after a week of diplomatic talks conducted by Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, which concluded on Friday.
the plan calls for a seven-day cessation of all hostilities in the Middle East, including in Lebanon, while Araqchi said that the conditions on the table are the same as those in a previous memorandum of understanding signed by Iran and the United States earlier this year.
The understanding, which collapsed last July, stipulated a cessation of hostilities on all fronts, the unfreezing of Iranian assets frozen since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and the lifting of US sanctions that are strangling the Iranian economy.
The proposal comes as the conflict between the United States and Iran, now in its seventh month, continues to falter, with the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies, remaining at the heart of the standoff between the two sides.
