British UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has announced he is relinquishing the championship belt after suffering a new injury to his right eye that prevented him from receiving medical clearance to return to competition.
Aspinall revealed via his Instagram account that he had undergone several surgeries during the past period, in addition to suffering injuries and inflammations, and was preparing to return to the ring this September, after he had already set a date for his fight and resumed sparring training.
The British fighter said he was feeling well and ready to fight, before accidentally suffering a new injury to his right eye, which forced him to postpone his return and give up the title.
Aspinall explained that doctors have not yet been able to determine a clear date for his full recovery, while confirming that he is not thinking of retiring from mixed martial arts.
Aspinall became nterim heavyweight champion in November 2023, before becoming the official division champion following Jon Jones' retirement in June 2025.
But the British fighter has not had a full fight since winning the title, as his only subsequent fight against Frenchman Cyril Jean ended in a no-contest after Aspinall was injured in the eye when his opponent’s fingers reached it during the fight.
Since October 2025, Aspinall has been out of competition, before the new injury caused an extension of his time away from fighting, leaving the UFC heavyweight belt vacant pending a decision on its fate.
