A new report by the United Nations' World Meteorological Organization, released Thursday, showed that the world's water stocks fell 42% below average last year.

The report stated: "The FAO's assessment of the global water cycle shows the depletion of global water stocks, the depletion of the world's water reserves , with total freshwater on the surface or underground (including groundwater, lakes, rivers, snow, ice, soil moisture, and plant and tree tissues) 42% below average last year."
The report indicated that 2025 was one of the driest years in the past 35 years in terms of global river flow indicators, with water levels below average in about two-thirds of river basins.
The year 2025 also marked the fourth consecutive year of widespread glacial mass loss across all regions of the world, posing short-term risks such as flooding and long-term challenges related to water resource availability. Between 2023 and 2025, glaciers lost mass annually, resulting in a total global loss of 1,400 gigatons of water.
Over the past five years, the world has witnessed record floods and droughts , with Asia and Africa accounting for at least half of all recorded water-related extreme weather events and more than 80% of all recorded deaths resulting from these events, according to the organization.
The organization pointed out the need for countries to prepare for a new reality characterized by water scarcity, stressing the importance of exchanging data, common standards, and a unified early warning system for disasters.
