A 61-year-old woman breaks the plank record

Canadian Donna Jean Wilde, in her sixties, broke her previous record and revealed two exercises that helped her build exceptional strength over the years.

In a remarkable achievement, Wilde, 61, a mother of five and grandmother of 12, broke her own previous world record in the Plank exercise, after holding the position for a full 5 hours.

Wilde, a former teacher from Wheeling, Canada, is one of the biggest names in the sport, having set a record of four hours, 30 minutes and 11 seconds in 2024, before surpassing it this year.

Wilde only discovered her talent for the plank in 2013, when the challenge went viral on social media, and her children began competing with each other to see who could hold the position the longest.

At that time, she had suffered a broken arm that prevented her from running because of the large cast she was wearing.

"I couldn't run, I could barely walk down the street with my arm in a sling, but I was able to do a plank, and that was a pivotal moment in my life. It changed everything," Wilde told Impact Magazine in a previous interview.

Over time, the exercise transformed from a mere family challenge into a genuine passion for her, and during the coronavirus pandemic, her children began wondering how long their mother could maintain the plank position, to the surprise that she was able to continue for two hours.

As a result, I decided to take the matter more seriously, and in 2023 I started a structured training program with the goal of breaking the world record.

Wilde's training wasn't limited to planks; it included a range of strength and fitness exercises, most notably push-ups, weightlifting, and running, in addition to regular plank workouts. Her experience confirms that building strength and maintaining fitness are not age-related, and that starting strength training can make a significant difference even later in life.

Among the exercises that helped Wilde develop her strength and endurance, push-ups and dead hangs stand out, both simple exercises that can contribute to strengthening the upper body, grip, and shoulders.
