Arda Turan rejects a "blank check" from the president of Trabzonspor

Turkish press reports indicate that Arda Turan, one of the most prominent Turkish football stars in recent years and the current coach of Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, refused an open check from officials of Turkish club Trabzonspor.

Turkish team Trabzonspor succeeded in making several outstanding deals during the last summer transfer window, after convincing Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, but failed to complete them by signing Arda Turan to take over the task of coaching the team.

Following the resignation of their former Turkish coach Fatih Teke, Trabzonspor turned to his compatriot Arda Turan, but the latter refused, according to press reports.

Local press reports stated that Trabzonspor offered coach Turan (39 years old) a 3-year contract worth up to 20 million euros, but he rejected the offer, preferring to continue with Shakhtar.

Trabzonspor then announced that German Thomas Reiss would take over as the team's technical director, succeeding coach Fatih Teke, after the team's results declined recently.

Turan’s name had entered Trabzonspor’s calculations following Fatih Teke’s departure, but the Turkish coach was not enthusiastic about returning to the Turkish league at that time, given his commitment to the Shakhtar project, as well as his desire to coach Galatasaray if he returned to work in Türkiye.

Arda Turan's name has also recently been linked to the possibility of leading his country's national team, Türkiye, as a replacement for Italian Vincenzo Montella, due to the decline in results after the Turkish national team suffered four consecutive defeats in the UEFA Nations League.

Turan’s fame stems from his playing career, having graduated from Galatasaray’s academy and played for the first team between 2005 and 2011, before moving to Atletico Madrid for 13 million euros. He then had a stint with Barcelona, and later played for Basaksehir, before retiring from football in 2022.

After retiring, Turan turned to coaching, starting his career with Eyüpspor in 2023, before taking over as coach of Shakhtar Donetsk in May 2025, where he later became one of the most sought-after names in the Turkish league.
