Researchers studied extracts from 17 types of edible plants and fruits to identify natural compounds capable of inhibiting Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Japanese plum, also known as "mome," proved to be the most effective, as they found that an extract from this fruit inhibits the growth of bacteria , including varieties resistant to many antibiotics. Moreover, it reduces the activity of genes that allow bacteria to damage stomach cells.
In experiments conducted on mice, the extract reduced inflammation and promoted the repair of the gastric mucosa. Experiments on human cells have also confirmed its protective properties.
Scientists have discovered that the organic acids found in this fruit may play an important role, as these compounds interact with the CagA protein, which helps bacteria damage cells and is linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer.
The researchers noted that their findings are based on experiments conducted on laboratory mice and human cells, and do not definitively prove that eating this fruit can help eliminate the infection in humans, but they do show promising results in using Japanese plums to develop treatments for Helicobacter pylori bacteria.
