Researchers analyzed emergency department data from some American hospitals between 2005 and 2024, revealing that nearly 42,500 people visited doctors due to eye injuries related to cosmetics and personal care products , the most serious of which were hairspray, eyelash glue, nail polish, and heat styling tools.

The results showed that 82% of those infected were women and girls, while nearly a quarter of the cases were children under the age of five.

For children, the main risk was found to be chemical burns, while for adults, cuts, bruises, and scratches to the eyes were the most common, accounting for 56% of cases. 22% of injuries were related to thermal burns, including burns resulting from the use of heat styling tools.

The researchers recommend storing cosmetics in places out of reach of children, handling hair styling tools with greater caution, and they particularly emphasize the need to monitor young children, as it was found that 70% of those affected under the age of five were using cosmetics without adult supervision.
