Twenty-two people participated in the experiments, 14 children and eight adults, who were randomly divided into three groups: the first group received 100% natural, sugar-free sour cranberry juice, the second group was given a drink with added sugar, containing 27% juice, and the third group was given water.

Before the experiment began, specialists collected samples of tartar that had accumulated on the participants’ teeth overnight. The participants then drank what was given to them after rinsing with it several times. After 30 minutes, the scientists took new samples of tartar for comparison.

It was found that tartar growth slowed down after consuming natural sour cranberry juice , and both children and adults who received this juice showed a decrease in acid production by bacteria that consume sugar and contribute to the destruction of tooth enamel.

Researchers attribute this potential positive effect to proanthocyanidins, natural substances found in sour cranberries that can inhibit the adhesion of certain types of bacteria to cells, and they believe that the juice of these fruits could become a useful addition to oral and dental health care.
