Researchers in the United States monitored approximately 100 people over the age of 60 who suffered from insomnia. Some of them underwent cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which involves working with a specialist to modify thoughts and habits that interfere with sleep. The remaining participants received only advice on sleep hygiene.
In the cognitive behavioral therapy group, the DunedinPACE index, which acts as a counter for the rate of aging based on changes in DNA, showed a slowing of this process. In the advice group, the opposite trend was observed.
Blood samples were taken from the participants before the intervention began, and they were then followed for two years. In the "advice" group, the analyses showed a marked acceleration in the rate of aging, while one indicator in the cognitive behavioral therapy group pointed to a slowing of the rate of biological aging.
The DunedinPACE index belongs to the epigenetic clock model, which measures the rate of age-related changes through chemical modifications to DNA. This model does not predict the time of death, but higher values are associated with declining health and a higher probability of death.
The study's lead author, Judith Carroll, said: "Insomnia may be a modifiable risk factor for aging."
The researcher believes that sleep should be viewed as an important part of healthy aging, along with diet and physical activity.
The reason for this effect is still unclear, but adequate sleep may help reduce inflammation and stress caused by chronic fatigue.
The study was published in the journal "The Lancet Healthy Longevity"
